<\/p>\nAs you know, next year we have elections, and the most important one locally is for the general mayor of the capital.
\nLess than one year before the elections, many wonder about Nicu\u0219or Dan’s chances for a second term. His chances depend on how much he accomplishes in his last year in office, and obviously on the potential opponents next year, but I believe other aspects such as political support, keeping promises, and his performance as a speaker and public figure should also be discussed.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Let’s start with the achievements of his current term and what he could do in his final year.
\nIn my opinion, his most significant and quantifiable achievement is the procurement of new public transit vehicles. He managed to secure contracts for 100 new trams, 100 electric buses, and 100 trolleybuses, all of which are set to replace the current outdated ones. Additionally, around 50 km of heating pipes have been replaced, tenders for the modernization of tram tracks have been initiated, the financial stabilization of the city hall was done and a debt of 3 billion lei has been payed.<\/p>\n
Realistically, his promises were too ambitious, and the numbers he committed to are challenging to achieve even in two terms (see the link below), but steps have been taken in almost all promised directions. If we are lenient considering he is an independent who inherited a troubled and corrupted city hall, we can understand to a certain extent the slowness of some changes. However, this slowness is the most politically vulnerable point, and combined with Nicu\u0219or’s lack of communication and his sublime yet non-existent charisma, it represents a significant political weakness.<\/p>\n

Regarding potential opponents, I see two major challengers who could defeat Nicu\u0219or Dan: Gabriela Firea (PSD) and Sebastian Burduja (PNL). In a direct confrontation, Firea could exploit his administrative slowness and literally dominate him in a debate, not letting him speak. However, Firea’s Achilles’ heel is her direct complicity in the exploitation and mistreatment of the elderly in some private nursing homes, which could be attacked by Nicu\u0219or and more effectively by Burduja, who is more capable than Nicu\u0219or Dan in using irony and sharp remarks.<\/p>\n

Another candidate I consider with a high chance is Sebastian Burduja, the current Minister of Energy and president of PNL Bucharest. I believe he has a chance because he is relatively new in high politics, so he doesn’t have a tarnished image. Moreover he has a young and Western energy that contrasts with the current image of PNL, making him seem like a breath of fresh air. Additionally, he is well-educated, has a pleasant physical appearance (which plays a subconsciously important role), and exudes a smart and fairly charismatic air. He could shape his image as a charismatic and new face promising significant changes, making him more interesting and appealing than Nicu\u0219or.
\nHowever, Burduja is not without politically vulnerable points either, as he is the son of a former Securitate (Romanian secret police) officer who engaged in some suspicious business dealings with banks in the 90s. In the past, Burduja Jr. has been associated with corrupt figures such as the Securitate-affiliated criminal Dan Voiculescu, mogul Sebastian Ghi\u021b\u0103, Mihai G\u00e2dea, and Ecaterina Andronescu.<\/p>\n
Another relevant element for the incumbent mayor is political support, as Nicu\u0219or is an independent who lost the support he had from PNL and collaborates with USR and PMP in the general council according to an informal deal.
\nSo far, Nicu\u0219or has the support of USR, PMP, and FD, and when I visited the REPER headquarters in August and spoke with people there, they expressed a desire to support him, but there hasn’t been official confirmation.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, Nicu\u0219or has had modest results so far but laid the foundations for improving the city.
\nThe political landscape and administrative realities left by Gabriela Firea indicated a challenging term, further amplified by the fact that Nicu\u0219or is neither a charismatic politician nor a combative and communicative figure.<\/p>\n
Certainly, many things can change before the elections, and another PSD candidate and an AUR candidate could significantly alter the course and outcome of the elections. What is clear is that Nicu\u0219or will face a tough political battle this year, and his last year in office is crucial for his chances of being re-elected.<\/p>\n
